What Windows version do I have?

Tech By 1 min read

Quick answer

Press Windows + R, type winver and press Enter. A window opens showing your Windows version (such as Windows 11) and its version number and build. For more detail, including edition and 32-bit or 64-bit, go to Settings > System > About.

The quickest check takes about five seconds and works on every version of Windows from the last two decades.

Method 1: winver

  1. Press Windows + R to open the Run box.
  2. Type winver and press Enter.
  3. The About Windows box shows your Windows version, version number and OS build.

Method 2: Settings

Go to Settings > System > About (in Windows 10: Settings > System > About too). Under Windows specifications, you’ll see:

ItemWhat it tells youExample
EditionHome, Pro, Enterprise or EducationWindows 11 Home
VersionThe yearly feature update25H2
OS buildThe exact build, which changes with monthly updates26200.xxxx
System type (above, under Device specifications)32-bit or 64-bit64-bit operating system

The version names follow a pattern: 24H2 means the update released in the second half of 2024.

Windows 10 or Windows 11?

If your Start button sits in the center of the taskbar by default, it’s almost certainly Windows 11. But since the taskbar can be moved, winver is the reliable answer.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It still runs, but no longer gets regular free security updates unless you’re enrolled in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates program. If your PC meets the requirements, upgrading to Windows 11 through Settings > Windows Update is free.

Why the version matters

  • Software requirements: Some apps and games need a minimum version.
  • Troubleshooting: Support guides often differ between Windows 10 and 11.
  • Security: Older versions eventually stop getting updates.

While you’re in Settings > About, you can also check how many cores your processor has, and if you need it for reinstalling, here’s how to find your Windows product key.
