How to restore tabs

Tech By 1 min read

Quick answer

Press Ctrl + Shift + T (Command + Shift + T on Mac) to reopen the last closed tab in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Press it again to keep reopening tabs in the order you closed them. If you closed the whole window, the same shortcut usually brings back all of its tabs.

Closed the wrong tab? You have more than one chance to get it back.

The universal shortcut

Ctrl + Shift + T on Windows, or Command + Shift + T on Mac, works in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Brave and Opera. Each press reopens one more tab or window from your recent history, with its back button history intact.

In Safari, press Command + Z right after closing a tab, or use Command + Shift + T in recent versions.

Restore tabs from history

If the tab is older, open your history:

  • Chrome: Click ⋮ > History > Recently closed, or press Ctrl + H.
  • Edge: Click ⋯ > History, then the Recently closed tab.
  • Firefox: Click ≡ > History > Recently closed tabs.
  • Safari: Open History in the menu bar and choose Recently Closed, or Reopen All Windows from Last Session.

Restore tabs after a crash or restart

Most browsers offer a Restore button right after an unexpected shutdown. If you missed it, check history as above. To make your tabs come back every time automatically:

  • Chrome: Settings > On startup > Continue where you left off
  • Edge: Settings > Start, home, and new tabs > Open tabs from the previous session
  • Firefox: Settings > General > Open previous windows and tabs

Lots of tabs you want to keep? Right-click any tab and choose Bookmark all tabs or Add tabs to a new group so they’re safe even if the session is lost.
