Game Assist is a special version of Microsoft Edge built into the Windows 11 Game Bar. It lets you look up guides and tips without leaving a game, and it shares your Edge favorites and history. Useful, but it can feel stuck on screen if it’s been pinned.

Why won’t Game Assist go away?

The usual reason is that it’s pinned. A pinned widget stays on top of your game even when the rest of Game Bar is closed. Unpinning it, as in the steps above, fixes this.

Does Game Assist slow down games?

According to Microsoft, Game Assist doesn’t use system resources when Game Bar isn’t open, and it shuts down by itself after a period of inactivity. Closing or unpinning it is usually all you need.

How to uninstall Game Assist

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Game Assist in the list.
  3. Click ⋯ next to it and choose Uninstall.

To get it back later, open Microsoft Edge, go to ⋯ (Settings and more) and search for Game Assist.

Requirements

Game Assist needs Windows 11 (version 22H2 or later) with the latest Game Bar and Microsoft Edge 137 or newer. It’s designed for keyboard and mouse, with controller support still being improved.

Game Bar can record your gameplay too. Here’s how to screen record on Windows.
