Who should I start in fantasy football?
Quick answer
To decide who to start in fantasy football, compare players on expected volume (targets, carries and snaps), matchup against the opposing defense, injury news, the game’s projected total points, and weather. When it’s close, start the player who gets more opportunities, and check final injury reports before kickoff.
Weekly rankings change constantly, so this guide gives you a method you can use every week rather than picks that go out of date.
The start/sit checklist
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Volume | Targets, carries, snap share, red-zone looks | Opportunity is the best predictor of points |
| Matchup | How many points the defense allows to that position | Weak defenses give up big games |
| Injuries | Practice reports, game-time decisions, teammates out | An injured teammate can mean more work |
| Game total | The betting line’s projected total points | High-scoring games mean more fantasy points |
| Game script | Is the team favored or likely trailing? | Trailing teams pass more; leading teams run more |
| Weather | Strong wind, heavy rain or snow | Wind hurts passing and kicking most |
| Bye weeks | Is your player’s team off this week? | A player on bye scores zero |
Simple tie-breakers
- Volume over talent. A decent player with 10 targets usually beats a star with 4.
- Floor vs ceiling. If you’re the favorite this week, start the steadier player. If you’re the underdog, take the boom-or-bust option.
- Avoid zeros. Don’t start players listed as “doubtful” in late games unless you have a backup plan.
- Don’t overreact to one big or bad week.
Know your league’s scoring
- PPR (points per reception): pass-catching running backs and slot receivers gain value.
- Standard: touchdowns and rushing yards matter more.
- Superflex or 2-QB leagues: quarterbacks become much more valuable.
Timing
Check news before the Thursday game for any players involved, again on Sunday morning, and about 90 minutes before kickoff, when NFL teams release inactive lists.
