A stadium that changed hands
Anfield opened in 1884 as the home of Everton. In 1892, after a dispute with the ground’s owner, John Houlding, Everton moved out across Stanley Park to Goodison Park. Houlding then founded a new club to play at Anfield: Liverpool FC. The two clubs’ matches are called the Merseyside derby.
The Kop
The Spion Kop stand was built in 1906 and named after a hill in South Africa where many soldiers from Liverpool died in the Boer War in 1900. Once a huge standing terrace for about 28,000 fans, it’s now all-seater but still famous for its noise.
“You’ll Never Walk Alone”
The song, from the 1945 musical Carousel, became Liverpool’s anthem after a 1963 cover by Liverpool band Gerry and the Pacemakers. Fans sing it before every home match, and the title appears on the club crest and the Shankly Gates.
Liverpool’s major honors
| Trophy | Titles (as of 2025) |

| League Cup | 10 (a record) |
Their 2019–20 title was their first league win in 30 years, under manager Jürgen Klopp. Under Arne Slot, they won the league again in 2024–25.
The “This Is Anfield” sign
A sign above the players’ tunnel reads “This Is Anfield,” installed by legendary manager Bill Shankly to intimidate visiting teams. Liverpool players touch it for luck as they walk onto the pitch.
Hillsborough
Liverpool and its fans remember the 97 supporters who died in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989, a crush at an FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield. An eternal flame memorial stands at Anfield.
