Quick answer

Chanel was founded by French designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971), who opened her first shop, selling hats, in Paris in 1910. The brand’s famous interlocking double-C logo stands for her initials. Chanel transformed women’s fashion with comfortable, elegant designs like the little black dress and the Chanel suit.

From orphanage to fashion icon

Gabrielle Chanel grew up partly in an orphanage in central France, where nuns taught her to sew. She worked as a café singer, possibly where she got the nickname “Coco,” then began making hats. With help from wealthy friends, she opened shops in Paris, Deauville and Biarritz.

Fashion revolutions

YearInnovation
1910sUsed jersey, a soft knit fabric then used for underwear, to make comfortable dresses
1921Chanel No. 5, one of the world’s best-selling perfumes
1926The little black dress, which Vogue compared to the Ford Model T for its simplicity
1950sThe tweed suit with a collarless jacket
1955The quilted 2.55 shoulder bag, letting women carry bags hands-free

She helped free women from corsets and heavy fabrics, making clothes that were practical and stylish.

The interlocking CC logo, designed by Coco Chanel herself, appeared in the 1920s and became one of the most recognized logos in fashion. Some think it was inspired by stained-glass windows at the Château de Crémat near Nice or the abbey where she grew up, but the exact origin is uncertain.

A complicated history

During World War II, Chanel lived at the Ritz in occupied Paris and had a relationship with a German officer. Historians have documented links to German intelligence, a part of her story that remains controversial.

Chanel after Coco

After her death in 1971, designer Karl Lagerfeld led the fashion house from 1983 until 2019, followed by Virginie Viard. Matthieu Blazy became creative director in 2025.
