Quick answer

Craggy Island is the fictional setting of Father Ted, a sitcom (not a drama) that aired on Britain’s Channel 4 from 1995 to 1998. It follows three Catholic priests, Father Ted Crilly, Father Dougal McGuire and the hard-drinking Father Jack Hackett, exiled to a bleak island off Ireland.

Each priest was exiled for a reason: Ted for misusing church money, Dougal for an unexplained incident, and Jack for his wild behavior.

Running jokes

  • Mrs. Doyle relentlessly offering people tea
  • Ted explaining to Dougal, with toy cows, that some cows are small and others are far away
  • Father Jack shouting short, rude words from his chair
  • Rivalry with smug Father Dick Byrne of nearby Rugged Island

Where it was filmed

Although Craggy Island is said to lie off Galway, exterior scenes were filmed in County Clare, especially around the limestone landscape of the Burren. The parochial house is a real private farmhouse near Kilnaboy that fans still visit. The opening credits show the Plassey shipwreck on Inis Oírr, in the Aran Islands.

A sad ending

Dermot Morgan died of a heart attack in 1998, just one day after filming the final series. The episodes aired as planned, and the show ended there.

Legacy

Father Ted is often voted one of the greatest British sitcoms. A fan festival, Ted Fest, is held in the Aran Islands. Co-creator Graham Linehan went on to make The IT Crowd, while Ardal O’Hanlon later starred in Death in Paradise.
