Which movie features the planet Pandora?
Quick answer
The fictional world of Pandora appears in Avatar (2009), directed by James Cameron, and its sequels. Technically, Pandora isn’t a planet but a lush, Earth-like moon orbiting a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system. It’s home to the tall, blue Na’vi people.
Avatar films
| Film | Year | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Avatar | 2009 | Still the highest-grossing film of all time, about $2.9 billion worldwide |
| Avatar: The Way of Water | 2022 | Explores Pandora’s oceans; one of the top-grossing films ever |
| Avatar: Fire and Ash | 2025 | Introduces a volcanic region and a new Na’vi clan |
Further sequels have been planned.
The story
In the 22nd century, humans mine Pandora for a valuable mineral called unobtanium. Because Pandora’s air is toxic to humans, scientists control genetically engineered Na’vi bodies called avatars. Former Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) uses an avatar to infiltrate the Omaticaya clan, falls in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and ends up defending Pandora against the human invaders.
Inside Pandora
- Floating mountains (the Hallelujah Mountains)
- Bioluminescent forests that glow at night
- Creatures such as the flying banshees (ikran) and the giant leonopteryx
- The Tree of Souls, which links all life on Pandora in a kind of network
Groundbreaking technology
Avatar pushed forward 3D filmmaking and performance capture, recording actors’ facial expressions in detail to animate the Na’vi. Cameron waited more than a decade for technology good enough to make it.
A real Pandora?
There really is a moon named Pandora, a tiny one orbiting Saturn. Saturn’s biggest moon is far more Pandora-like: Titan. Cameron also made Titanic, another record-breaker.
