What part of the brain controls balance?

Quick answer

The cerebellum, at the back and bottom of the brain, is mainly responsible for balance, coordination and smooth movement. Its name means “little brain” in Latin. It works with the inner ear, eyes and sensors in your muscles and joints to keep you steady.

What the cerebellum does

  • Balance and posture: keeps you upright when standing, walking or turning
  • Coordination: times muscle movements so they work together smoothly
  • Fine motor skills: writing, typing, playing an instrument
  • Motor learning: helps you get better at skills like riding a bike through practice

Although it makes up only about 10% of the brain’s volume, the cerebellum contains more than half of all the brain’s neurons.

The main parts of the brain

PartMain jobs
CerebrumThinking, memory, language, senses, voluntary movement
CerebellumBalance, coordination, movement timing
BrainstemBreathing, heart rate, sleep, swallowing
ThalamusRelays sensory signals
HypothalamusBody temperature, hunger, hormones

The balance team

The cerebellum doesn’t work alone. It combines signals from:

  1. The inner ear (vestibular system): fluid-filled canals detect head movement and gravity.
  2. The eyes: tell you where you are relative to your surroundings.
  3. Proprioceptors: sensors in muscles and joints report the position of your body.

When these signals disagree, for example reading in a moving car, you can feel motion sick.

When balance goes wrong

Alcohol affects the cerebellum, which is why police use walking-in-a-straight-line tests. Dizziness and balance problems can have many causes, from inner ear issues to other conditions, so persistent problems should be checked by a doctor.
