Who invented school?
Quick answer
No single person invented school. The earliest known schools appeared in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt more than 4,000 years ago, training scribes to read and write. Horace Mann (1796–1859) is often called the “father of American public education” for championing free, tax-funded schools for all children.
Online, you’ll often see the claim that a man named “Henry Fischel” invented school or homework. There’s no historical evidence he existed; it’s an internet myth.

Why Horace Mann matters
Mann, a lawyer and politician from Massachusetts, toured schools in Europe and campaigned for “common schools”: free, non-sectarian schools paid for by taxes and open to every child. He also pushed for trained teachers, creating some of the first teacher-training colleges, called “normal schools.” His ideas spread across the US.
Why schools spread
| Reason | Example |
|---|---|
| Need for skilled writers and record-keepers | Ancient scribes |
| Religion | Learning to read sacred texts |
| Industrialization | Factories and offices needed literate workers |
| Democracy | Educated citizens to vote and take part in society |
School around the world today
Almost every country has compulsory education, typically between ages 5–7 and 14–18. Still, millions of children worldwide don’t attend school, especially girls in some regions and children affected by conflict.
