The design

The building’s Y-shaped floor plan was inspired by the Hymenocallis, a desert flower. The shape helps reduce wind forces, which become the biggest challenge in very tall buildings. As it rises, the tower steps back in a spiral pattern, ending in a slender spire.

Why “Khalifa”?

It was originally called Burj Dubai (“Dubai Tower”). Just before opening, it was renamed in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, then president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, which had helped Dubai during the 2008–2009 financial crisis.

A taller rival

The Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia, under construction, is designed to exceed 1,000 m. If completed, it would take the title from the Burj Khalifa.

Going to the top

The At the Top observation decks on levels 124, 125 and 148 offer views across the desert and the Persian Gulf. Below, the Dubai Fountain puts on music and water shows each evening.
