Who is my MP?
Quick answer
To find your MP, go to the UK Parliament website (members.parliament.uk) and enter your postcode in the “Find your MP” search. It shows your MP’s name, party, constituency and contact details. There are 650 MPs, one for each constituency in the UK.
What an MP does
A Member of Parliament (MP) represents everyone living in their constituency in the House of Commons, whether or not you voted for them. MPs debate and vote on laws, question the government, and help constituents with problems involving national government services.
What your MP can help with
| They can help with | They usually can’t help with |
|---|---|
| Problems with government departments, such as benefits, visas, passports or tax | Disputes with neighbors or private companies |
| Raising local issues in Parliament | Court cases or legal advice |
| Passing your views on laws being debated | Matters run by your local council (contact your councillor instead) |
How to contact your MP
- Email or letter: Include your full address and postcode, so they can confirm you’re a constituent.
- Surgery: Many MPs hold regular local appointments.
- Free service: WriteToThem.com can also help you find and message your representatives.
