How to renew a passport

Everyday Life & How-To By 1 min read

Quick answer

Most US adults can renew online through the State Department’s Online Passport Renewal system if their passport was issued in the last 10 years, they’re 25 or older, and they aren’t changing their name. A passport book renewal costs $130. If you don’t qualify online, you can usually renew by mail with Form DS-82.

This page covers US passports. Other countries have their own rules, so check your government’s official passport website if you hold a different passport.

Can you renew online?

According to the US Department of State, you can renew online if all of these are true:

  • Your passport was issued within the last 10 years, and it expires within a year or expired less than 5 years ago.
  • You’re 25 or older.
  • You’re not changing your name or sex marker.
  • You won’t travel internationally for at least 6 weeks after applying.
  • You’re in a US state or territory when you apply.
  • You have the passport, and it isn’t damaged or reported lost or stolen.

Passport renewal fees

ItemFee
Passport book$130
Passport card$30
Book and card$160
Optional 1–3 day delivery of the finished book$22.05

Online renewals can’t be expedited. If you need your passport fast, renew by mail with expedited service or ask about an urgent appointment.

How to renew online

  1. Go to the State Department’s Online Passport Renewal site at travel.state.gov.
  2. Create an account and fill in the application.
  3. Upload a digital passport photo that meets the photo rules.
  4. Pay by credit or debit card.
  5. Wait for email updates. Your old passport is canceled once you submit, so don’t travel on it.

How to renew by mail

  1. Fill out Form DS-82.
  2. Include your most recent passport, a printed passport photo and payment by check or money order.
  3. Mail everything to the address listed on the form instructions.

If you don’t qualify to renew at all, for example because your old passport was issued when you were under 16, you’ll need to apply in person with Form DS-11.
