Why is Halloween on October 31?
The name is short for All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before All Saints’ Day (All Hallows) on November 1. Many traditions also trace back to Samhain, a Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest and the start of winter, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.
Over centuries, the Christian holiday and older customs blended. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many of these traditions to North America in the 1800s.
